Haddon Sundblom was born in Before he drew Santa Claus in , people thought Santa looked like some kind of leprechaun or a cross between a gnome and a bishop. That doesn't paint a pretty picture. Coca-Cola wanted someone friendlier drinking their product so they hired Haddon Sundblom to come up with a new image. He did a good job too. Clement Moore's poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (written in ) described the toy maker as "chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf." Haddon Sundblom changed that elf into a friendly and jolly human. Biography
The son of Scandinavian immigrants, Haddon Sundblom is best known for his illustrations of Santa Claus for Coca-Cola advertisements. He illustrated Coke's Santa from to , though Sundblom's Santa is so entwined with Christmas and Coke, the company continues to use his paintings to promote their product. So important was the relationship between Sundblom and Coca-Cola that his version of Santa remains the most recognizable.
In , Sundblom's illustration of the Quaker Oats man helped to popularize the brand. In addition to his advertising work, Sundblom painted hundreds of pin-up paintings. A mentor to Gil Elvgren, Andrew Loomis, and others, Sundblom is credited as one of most influential pin-up artists of the 20th Century.

Yet, in the end, only one picture spread across different cultures to fix the image of the holiday icon we know and love. This image was shaped by the artist Haddon Sundblom and made popular by a beverage brand we all know too well. Coca-Cola started using the image of Santa Claus in their advertisements in the s, but in the earliest illustrations Santa looks severe and rigid, and even wearing the classic red suit and sporting a beard, he is missing the warmth and the magic holiday spark.
The job of creating a symbolic but realistic representation of Santa was commissioned to the illustrator Haddon Sundblom (). Inspired by Clement Clark Moore’s poem A Visit From St. Nicholas, the artist portrayed a man with twinkling eyes, rosy cheeks, and a round belly who played with the toys he delivered and embraced the children that stayed up late waiting for him.
