Jeanne louise farrenc biography

Louise Farrenc

Early Life

Farrenc was born “Jeanne-Louise Dumont” in in Paris on May 31, Having come from a long line of visual artists, and growing up in an arts district, Farrenc–much like her siblings–was encouraged first by her family and later by her husband to pursue the arts. She got to spend her life doing the things that she loved, and she was lucky; this was unfortunately not the case for many other women during this time (In fact, Farrenc would often later be praised by critics for being “not like other women”). As a child, she received a lot of training and eventually became very talented in drawing and painting. She may have even considered a career in the visual arts like her ancestors before her were it not for her childhood piano teacher Anne-Élisabeth Cécile Soria, who helped her discover her love for piano. It soon became evident to everyone around ten-year-old Farrenc that she harbored an incredible passion for music.

The Romantic Era’s Best-Kept Secret: Louise Farrenc

The Romantic era, a time of towering figures and revolutionary ideas, often celebrated the artist as hero, and the composer as genius. Yet, in this storied period, the name Louise Farrenc remains curiously discounted — a composer who crafted meticulously balanced symphonies and chamber works while subverting the constraints placed upon women in 19th-century music. Farrenc’s life, marked by brilliance and defiance, unfurls as a testament to the quiet rebellion of a woman unwilling to be confined by social expectations. Her journey from the rarefied halls of the Louvre to the venerated Paris Conservatoire reveals an artist deeply rooted in the classical tradition but propelled by a vision that was distinctly her own.

Louise Farrenc was born Jeanne-Louise Dumont on May 31st, , in Paris, into a family deeply rooted in the visual arts. Her father, Jacques-Edme Dumont, was a court sculptor for Louis XVI, and her mother came from the prestigious Coypel family of painters. Raised within the artistic precincts of the Sorbonne Université, she lived in a world infused with creative expression, where the visual and performing arts conve

In the  Revue et Gazette Musicale, a weekly French publication dedicated to classical music, a reviewer noted that that composer Louise Farrenc’s symphonies embodied “the highest symphonic talent among woman”, adding that Farrenc was “not only the first of her sex to approach the genre but one whose symphonies a great many male composers would be proud to have written.” In addition to writing three symphonies and an impressive catalogue of chamber music and solo pieces, Farrenc was a virtuoso pianist, pioneering scholar and the only female tenured professor in the 19th century at the Paris Conservatory (although she was only permitted to teach female students).

According to one recent study, the gender pay gap might not disappear until , but even back in the mid 19th century, Farrenc wasn’t willing to accept the status quo. After the success of her elegant ‘Nonet’ for wind and strings, whose premiere in featured the star violinist Joseph Joachim, she demanded the same salary as her male counterp

Louise Farrenc ()

Louise Farrenc, born Jeanne-Louise Dumont, came from a long line of creative people. Several of her female relatives were royal painters, and her brother was Prix de Rome-winning sculptor Auguste Dumont. She showed talent in the arts at an early age, and possessed professional-level piano skills by the time she was a teenager. At age 15, she became a composition student of Anton Reicha at the Paris Conservatory. As a woman, she was forbidden from enrolling in traditional composition classes, so she took private lessons with Reicha to circumvent this rule.

About two years after beginning her formal studies, Farrenc married fellow Conservatory student Aristide Farrenc, a flautist and music publisher. She ended her lessons with Reicha to travel France and perform with Aristide. After they finished touring, Aristide formed the world-famous Farrenc Éditions publishing house, while Louise re-enrolled in lessons with Reicha to further expand her compositional knowledge.

Farrenc was appointed Professor of Piano at the Paris Conservatory in , a post she held until she retired in She was only the second female professor to teach at the Conservatory, but onl
