Summary of Louise Nevelson
Louise Nevelson emerged in the art world amidst the dominance of the Abstract Expressionist movement. In her most iconic works, she utilized wooden objects that she gathered from urban debris piles to create her monumental installations - a process clearly influenced by the precedent of Marcel Duchamp'sfound object sculptures and readymades. Nevelson carefully arranged the objects in order to historicize the debris within the new, narrative context of her wall sculptures. The stories embodied within her works resulted from her cumulative experiences - as a Jewish child relocated to America from Russia, as an artist training in New York City and Germany, and as a hard-working, successful woman. Her innovative sculptural environments and success within the male-dominated realm of the New York gallery system inspired many younger artists, primarily those involved in installation art and the Feminist art movements.

Louise Nevelson: The Artist and the Legend
The celebrity that surrounded being an artist had great appeal for her. Her flamboyant costumes consisted of dramatic clothing, colourful headscarves and elaborate layers of false eyelashes. Her friends and acquaintances included Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee, whose Occupant, a play about Nevelson's life, premiered off Broadway in with Anne Bancroft in the leading role; Andrew Wyeth; Diego Rivera, with whom she worked briefly as an assistant; and Frida Kahlo. In , she appeared at the White House to receive a National Medal of Arts from President Ronald Reagan. She was photographed for the cover of the May 24, , issue of Life magazine. And she was the subject of a set of Louise Nevelson commemorative stamps issued in by the U.S. Postal Service. These and other accomplishments pointed to a person who was as comfortable in the public spotlight as she was showing her art in major museums and galleries in the U.S., Europe and Japan.

Louise Berliawsky was born on September 23, , in Kiev, Ukraine. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was six years old and settled in Rockland, Maine. Her father was a timber merchant and, as a child, Louise played frequently in her father’s timber-yard. Louise’s childhood experiences in the forests of Maine may have predisposed her towards wood as a medium for sculpture later in life.
In , Louise married Charles Nevelson, a wealthy ship owner, and moved to New York. Two years later, their son Myron Mike was born. In New York, Nevelson began to study visual and performing arts, including singing and dancing, and in , she enrolled in New York’s Art Students’ League to study painting and sculpture. At this time, Nevelson was exposed to the artwork of Marcel Duchamp and Pablo Picasso.
In , Nevelson and her husband separated. Nevelson left her son with her parents to travel through Europe. She studied ancient and modern art in Italy, Germany, and Paris and briefly attended Hans Hoffman’s school in Munich.

This film offers a window into Nevelson’s creative process, and presents an intimate portrait of the artist at work.
