This Filipina Is The World’s Fastest Reader

In July of , a Filipina teenager became an international sensation when her phenomenal feat was reported by the Associated Press of the U.S.

“In the time it takes that most people read the label on a cereal box,” the story began, “fifteen year-old Maria Teresa Calderon could read half a book, or more—if  she didn’t have to turn the pages.”

Such was the extraordinary gift of Calderon—for,  at Northwestern University’s Rapid Reading class under Dr. Florence Schale, she had read a three-page college level essay containing 3, words in seconds—a reading rate of more than 50, words per minute (wpm), with a remarkable % comprehension! (Note: an average person reads wpm, with 70% comprehension).

While Calderon’s reading skill was not unique (Economist Stuart Mill could read 37, wpm, writer Oscar Wilde could read a paper at a glance, and even Ferdinand Marcos was said to speed-read at a rate of 8, wpm), it was her achievement that made it to major papers in the U.S, and was headlined in Manila dailies.

FORMER Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos was reported to read 8, words per minute (wpm), former U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy, 6, wpm, and Theodore Roosevelt can glance at a page and repeat the contents verbatim.

An average college student from top colleges and universities in the country can read from wpm with 60% to 70%+  comprehension.  Educators call those who can read over 20, wpm with more than 75% comprehension, gifted people.  Yet in July ,  a teen-age Filipina at the Northwestern University (Chicago, Illinois) was recorded to read at 50, wpm  with % comprehension.  She was Maria Theresa Fabros Calderon, who was a participant in the university’s Rapid Reading Program.

It appeared that some  doubtful experts in that part of the world did not accept the result hook, line, and sinker.  Thus, reading experts from the Northwestern University, Purdue University, University of Minnesota and University of  Illinois  conducted  a reading  test later.  The result, Caldero

ON JULY 17, , Professor Florence Schale, Director for Rapid Reading Program of Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, told the whole world that her prize pupil established a score of 50, words per minute for the record books with one hundred percent comprehension in her final exams.
     Prof. Schale's prize pupil was the "petite, smiling, warm and unassuming" year old Maria Teresa Fabros Calderon from the Philippines.
     In subsequent tests given by the University of Minnesota, the University of Illinois, the Purdue University and Northwestern University, Maritess reset the record books with her reading speed of 80, words per minute with percent comprehension.
     Newspapers across the world bannered her name, paid tribute to her exceptional ability, and gave her an honorific title: "World's Fastest Reader."
