“Membathisi Mdladlana’s passing, is a loss to his family and friends as much as it is to the nation. While we may try to prepare ourselves for the inevitability of such a loss, bereavement is never easy.

He added that Mdladlana “provided leadership in this strategic sector of our struggle at a time of great repression by the state and growing resistance by the people."
Mdladlana is founding member the South African Democratic Teacher Union (SADTU), and is also a former South African ambassador to Canada.

Acting President Paul Mashatile made the declaration on Tuesday.
"Acting President Mr Paul Mashatile has declared a special official funeral, category 2, to honour former Minister of Labour and High Commissioner to Canada Mr Membathisi Shepherd Mdladlana," said acting spokesperson Keith Khoza.
The national flag will be flown at half-mast around the country from Tuesday morning until the evening of the funeral on Saturday.

Confirming the news of his death and remembering his uncle on SABC News on Friday afternoon, Madladlana’s nephew Mayibuye Sokupa said the former minister remained passionate about teaching until his last days.
