Mircea Suciu studied painting at the Cluj Art School in Rumania where he currently teaches. Suciu started his career focusing on the history of visual representation with an emphasis on the human figure that explores questions of identity and isolation. Using images taken from 's and 's American advertisement, Suciu isolates figures, strips away backgrounds and reduces the bold palette of the original ads to seductive monochromes. These early paintings emphasize a sense of alienation. Characters are presented looking into boxes, holes and windows, hiding their faces from the spectator.
Ghost is part of a new creational cycle in which the artist occults human presence focusing on creating indefinite spaces. Using a black and white chiaroscuro, the painting depicts a big dark curtain suspended in space illuminated by a beam of light. On the surface of the drape suggestive undefined shapes are open to interpretation, and induce a subtle sensation of mystery. Jason Haam is pleased to present A Touch of Evil by Mircea Suciu. Recent works by the artist will be on display in the gallery’s first and second floor exhibition spaces. Following the mural-like installation at the Gwangju Biennale, this will be the artist’s second time exhibiting in Korea.
Process is equally important for Suciu as is the final image. He manipulates his works through the monoprint technique to explore the various interpretations found within a singular image. Suciu prints found or photographed images onto acrylic films, which are then transferred onto linen. By doing so, Suciu highlights the multiple facets of a single body of work and his process simultaneously. As he enhances images through this process, Suciu provides diverse perspectives and means of representation to his works.
Suciu’s works examine the duality of humanity, revealing a bleak present and future caused by the cruelty of human behavior. This violent cycle caused by the human tendency to deny our inherent nature drives the society to commit atrocities, which in turn, inhibits progression. Artist Statement:
Predominantly working in oil paint and charcoal drawings, Mircea Suciu depicts solitary figures or groups—sometimes state and religious authorities—in spare surroundings and caught in moments of inner conflict. Suciu grew up in an area of Romania loaded with historical conflict and came of age during and after the revolution. Fascinated by what he describes as “the absurd actions of man,” Suciu explores human foibles and existential problems in his work, pointing to the psychological terrain of his subjects. In one series of paintings, Suciu’s figures poke their heads through windows or into boxes, appearing to search for a way out, or their faces are otherwise obscured, suggesting states of alienation. The artist mines imagery from s and ’50s advertising, reducing down the elements and adding symbolism, sometimes inflected with dark humor. Suciu’s work has been compared to that of René Magritte.
