Who Was Phillis Wheatley Peters?
Phillis Wheatley arrived in Boston from her African homeland in July Though only about seven or eight years old, she was transported with other captives aboard the ship Phillis as part of an ongoing push to make slavery central to the economies, politics, and daily life in North America. Purchased by a New England merchant, John Wheatley, and “given” to his wife Susanna, the young girl found herself far from her West African home, suddenly immersed in a foreign culture where--however benign the Wheatleys themselves may have viewed their relationship to the young girl--she was, in fact, enslaved.
Though we cannot recover much of Phillis Wheatley’s personal or family history prior to what must have been a terrifying transatlantic journey, we do know reasons why she remarkably became, as a young adolescent, a celebrity author, first in her new “home” city of Boston, and, not long afterwards, internationally.

Phillis Wheatley Peters is broadly recognized as the first African American woman and only the third American woman to publish a book of poems. Her works continues to be studied by historians, and her legacy has inspired generations of writers.
Born around in Gambia, Africa, Wheatley was captured by enslavers and brought to America in Upon arrival, she was sold to the Wheatley family in Boston, Massachusetts. Her first name Phillis was derived from the ship that brought her to America, “the Phillis.”
The Wheatley family educated her and within sixteen months of her arrival in America she could read the Bible, Greek and Latin classics, and British literature. She also studied astronomy and geography. In her early teenage years, Wheatley began to write poetry, publishing her first poem in Publication of “An Elegiac Poem, on the Death of the Celebrated Divine George Whitefield” in brought her great notoriety. In , with financial support from the English Countess of Huntingdon, Wheatley traveled to London with the Wheatley's son to publish her first collection of poems, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral—the first book written by an enslaved Black woman in America.
Although Wheatley's birth is not documented, it is believed that she was born in in what is now Gambia or Senegal.
At the age of seven, Wheatley is kidnapped and brought to Boston, Massachusetts on a slave ships called The Phillis.
She named the young girl Phillis after the ship she traveled on, who was then given the surname Wheatley.
At the age of twelve, Wheatley sees her first poem published in the Newport Mercury. Since getting purchased by the Wheatley family, Phillis has received an unparalleled education; in large part thanks to the personal tutoring of the Wheatley children, Mary and Nathaniel.
Wheatley's poetic tribute to evangelist George Whitefield is published. The poem is praised for its articulacy and graceful power, and Wheatley begins to be considered a talented writer and poet.

Who Was Phillis Wheatley?
Poet Phillis Wheatley was brought to Boston, Massachusetts, on an enslaved person ship in and was purchased by John Wheatley as a personal servant to his wife. The Wheatleys educated Phillis and she soon mastered Latin and Greek, going on to write highly acclaimed poetry. She published her first poem in and her first volume of verse, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, in Having been freed from slavery, she later married and struggled financially, with Wheatley unable to find a publisher for her second volume of poems.
