Fstoppers Interviews National Geographic Cinematographer and Photographer Renan Ozturk

North Face athlete. National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. Painter. Cinematographer. Filmmaker. Whether climbing first ascents or hanging off cliffs to film hallucinogenic honey hunters, Renan Ozturk's bio reads like that of five people. Fstoppers was lucky enough to interview this talented creative. Find out all about him and his process here.

Ozturk's last undergraduate class was an art class, which inspired him to pursue climbing and landscape artwork after he graduated. As his climbing work led him to working with North Face and cameras became smaller, he wanted to reach more people and felt that the audio and visual combination of film could create an emotional response in more audiences.

Photography would come in the last few years as another addition, with clients like National Geographic jumping on board. He finds his time as an athlete and a painter influences his work; he first started video work with time-lapses, feeling it was a natural progression from painting, while his subject matter tends toward the remote and physically inaccessible, such as dangling off a cliff in a

He began his career as an expedition climber and landscape artist, spending years living in a tent beneath the big walls of U.S. National Parks and in the snowy Himalayan mountains. All of his paintings were created on expedition, carrying large cotton canvases on his back, sometimes even using natural pigments pulled straight from the earth to capture these wildly beautiful landscapes. He received National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in for his combination of cutting-edge first ascents and visual storytelling.

Currently, Renan works as a commercial and documentary filmmaker, an expedition climber for The North Face, and a photojournalist for Sony and National Geographic. The films he’s made over the years have had a global presence; he’s probably best known for MERU (cinematographer/subject), which won the Audience Choice Award at Sundance, and the critically acclaimed Sherpa (cinematographer/co-director), which screened at TIFF and Telluride. He’s directed and shot commercial work for major international brands such as Apple, Google, DJI and Nike.

Explorer, author and professional climber Mark Synnott is standing in steep, loose rock about to step off the roped route on the top of Mount Everest. He’s about to leave the well-worn path above a 7,foot cliff more than 28, feet above sea level.

“No. No. No, no!”

Those are the voices from behind mountaineer Renan Ozturk’s camera lens. The team is not onboard with the plan anymore. They are descending from the summit of the world’s highest peak, on a mission to find the lost body of Andrew “Sandy&#; Irvine, the year-old British explorer last seen on the rooftop of the world on June 8, , with renowned explorer George Mallory.

A climbing team not unlike this one found Mallory’s body in Mallory was not carrying the camera he and Irvine shared on their ill-fated expedition. The team led by Synnott and guide Jamie McGuinness was driven to find Irvine’s body and see if he had that camera. If a picture on the camera showed the two adventurers on top of Everest, history would be rewritten.

The search beyond the path was, as Synnott says in National Geographic’s “Lost on Everest”  documentary airing June 30, “a moment of truth.”

“That moment was mu

WINNER, DOCUMENTARY AUDIENCE AWARD FOR 'MERU'

I kicked off my career as an expedition climber and landscape artist, dedicating years of my life to living in a tent, whether it was beneath the towering walls of U.S. National Parks or in the frozen expanses of the Himalayas. Every painting I've ever made was born on an expedition; I'd lug large cotton canvases on my back and sometimes even extract natural pigments right from the earth to bring these awe-inspiring landscapes to life. In , my unique blend of pioneering first ascents and visual storytelling earned me the title of National Geographic Adventurer of the Year.

Fast forward to today, and I wear multiple hats: I'm a commercial and documentary filmmaker, an expedition climber for The North Face, and a photojournalist for both Sony and National Geographic. The films I've contributed to have gained global attention, including MERU, for which I served as both cinematographer and subject and which took home the Audience Choice Award at Sundance. Another career highlight is the critically acclaimed Sherpa, where I was a cinematographer and co-director, screened at TIFF and Telluride. On the
