St. Adelaide

Born c. in Burgandy, St. Adelaide married, at 15 or 16, Lothair of Italy to whom her father had engaged her when she was two. When Lothair died three years later, his successor and usurper Berengar of Ivrea imprisoned Adelaide and attempted to force her to marry his son. Legends tell of Adelaide's escape to Canossa, where she appealed to Otto of Germany for help. He conquered Italy and married her in John XII crowned the pair rulers of the Holy Roman Empire the following year. After Otto's death in , Adelaide quarrelled with Otto II, possibly at the instigation of her daughter-in-law, Theophano, and lived with her brother in Burgandy. She established many monasteries and churches; she also became interested in evangelism. She and her son reconciled before his death in , and she became regent for her grandson, Otto III. Adelaide died in at the convert at Seltz, which she had founded. Cluny became the center of her cult. She was canonized in

Saint Adele was a notable figure in early medieval Europe, renowned for her piety and dedication to religious life. She was born into royalty as the daughter of King Dagobert II of Germany. Following the death of her husband, Adele chose a life of religious devotion and became a nun. During this period, she also ensured the well-being of her son, who would later become the father of Saint Gregory of Utrecht.

Adele&#;s commitment to her faith led her to establish a convent near Trier, at a place called Palatiolum. She served as the first Abbess of this convent, where she was admired for her holiness, wisdom, and compassionate leadership.

Her religious journey was also influenced by her association with Saint Boniface, known as the Apostle of Germany, who was a guiding figure in her spiritual life. Adele and Saint Boniface corresponded, and one of his letters to her has been preserved in historical records.

Saint Adele lived a life marked by fervent faith and good deeds, deeply engaged in her communion with God. She passed away in the year , leaving behind a legacy of devout Christian service and leadership.

 When a person has money, he or she can use it for good or for ill. Adele used her money and power to do much good.

 

St. Adela was born sometime around the year and was the youngest daughter of William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and King of England, and his wife Mathilde of Flanders. Adela was very well educated, spoke several languages, and was deeply religious. Around the year , she married Stephen III, Count of Blois, who was one of the richest men in Europe. Together they had 11 children although some of them may have been Stephen’s children from a previous marriage because he was 20 years older than Adela.

 

Adela supported scholars and poets at her court, and this significantly contributed to the spiritual and cultural life of her time. She continue this support all of her life. She also generously endowed abbeys and churches with money so they could expand and preserve the culture
