I finally finished all seven seasons of Gilmore Girls last night. The ending was not exactly an ending; I guess it really wasnt designed to end. Indeed, who wanted Gilmore Girls to end? I would have wanted to see Rory through her journalistic endeavors and perhaps Lorelais marriage to Luke (if no new offspring shows up). It definitely was a journey. I loved living there. It was ideal and romantic and everything thats quaint and lovely.
I have mentioned in my previous Rory Gilmore post the added charm of the show for me. Rory is as bookish as any bookish can be. It is nice to see a beautiful, confident, sensitive, independent and smart young woman for a character. And her mother, Lorelai Gilmore, is quite extraordinary too. I really love all of the characters there, particularly Gypsy and Kirk.
To commemorate my finishing Gilmore Girls, I wanted to post her high school graduation speech which was delivered on the last episode of the third season. I think it is the best high school speech there is, and is a true testament to how books influenced her life together with how she was raised.

Veronica Elizabeth Marian Forrest-Thomson (28 November – 26 April ) was a Scottish poet and a critical theorist. Her study Poetic Artifice: A Theory of Twentieth-Century Poetry was reissued in Veronica was born in Malaya to a rubber planter, John Forrest Thomson, and his wife, Jean, but grew up in Glasgow, Scotland. She opted to hyphenate her surname, having originally been published under the name Veronica Forrest. She studied at the University of Liverpool (BA, ) and Girton College, Cambridge (PhD, ) where her first supervisor was the poet J. H. Prynne. Her Cambridge friends included the poets Wendy Mulford and Denise Riley. Forrest-Thomson later taught at the universities of Leicester and Birmingham. Forrest-Thomson's critical study Poetic Artifice: A Theory of Twentieth-Century Poetry was published by Manchester University Press in It was reissued with notes and an introduction by Gareth Farmer in with Shearsman press. Her poetry collections included Identi-kit (), the award-winning Language-Games () and the posthumous On the Periphery (). Subsequent gatherings of her work include Collected Poems
There are many similarities between the poetries of Veronica Forrest-Thomson and Anna Mendelssohn. Both were associated with the ‘Cambridge School’ of poetry, and lived and studied in Cambridge, but never acquired the professional and social security enjoyed by some of the men of the movement. Indeed, both in their work demonstrate a suspicion of academic sophistry, while still striving for a rigorous and innovative approach to the unmet challenges of poetic form. Each has seen a revival of critical interest in her work in the last ten years, helped in both cases by the availability of archives (at Girton College, Cambridge and the University of Sussex, respectively). And yet few critics mention them in the same sentence, much less attempt to read their work in dialogue. This essay therefore examines the poetics of each poet and demonstrates how they might have read one another. While it seems likely that Mendelssohn would have been aware of Forrest-Thomson’s work, there are no direct references to her in Mendelssohn’s published writing. However, we c
There arent many academic theories that can look at poems from Hughes, Ashberys The Tennis Court Oath (remember Harold Blooms crabby dismissal of the entire project), concrete poetry, William Empson and T. S. Eliot without apologies, while maintaining an attention to what poems may come in the future beyond its compass, or between the cracks. The beauty of the theory (which is only lightly sketched here) is that it allows one to cross the lines separating various "poetics" these codes of literary identity that are more often a system of dislikes and cross into that central element all poetry shares, the physis of its Artifice. Veronica Forrest-Thomson and High Artifice
While there are, in general, some flawed arguments in Poetic Artifice, it is remarkably flexible, especially in its anticipation of the sort of bad Naturalization that "postmodernism" itself has created, in which the marginal, the excessive, the fractured and the irrational have all found their way toward the clarity of general understanding, some of it actually as easily acquired as the "confessional" rubrics that the experimental branch of poets
