Former four-term Mayor of Indianapolis and Congressman, author, public speaker, TV commenta&#;tor, think tank fellow, elected offcial, and clergyman, William Hudnut is currently the Managing Partner of Bill Hudnut Consultants LLC, specializing in urban revitalization and economic development, and Senior Resident Fellow Emeritus at the Urban Land Institute, Washington, DC.
Prior to his entry into public life, he served as clergyman in churches in Buffalo, NY, Annapolis, MD, and Indianapolis, IN. After stepping down as Mayor, Mr. Hudnut held posts at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, the Hudson Institute in Indianapolis, and the Civic Federation in Chicago, before assuming his current position with ULI in Mr. Hudnut is a past mem&#;ber and offcer of the Board of the National League of Cities. Biography of William H. Hudnut III
A Princeton University and Union Theological Seminary graduate, former pastor in Indianapolis, Buffalo, and Annapolis, and Congressman representing Indianapolis, Hudnut was also the longest serving Mayor of Indianapolis. A third generation Presbyterian minister, he came to Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis in In , he was elected to represent the people of Indianapolis in Congress where he sponsored 17 bills that became law.
After winning his first Mayoral bid in , Hudnut was sworn in on January 1, and was re-elected three times. During his 16 years as the City’s chief executive, dozens of major building projects were completed downtown, including the expansion of the Indiana Convention Center. In , a larger-than-life-size statue of “Mayor Bill” was dedicated in his honor near the Convention Center.
During the Hudnut years, more than $4 billion was committed to downtown Indianapolis redevelopment. Hudnut oversaw the effort to bring Colts professional football to Indianapolis, following the construction of a domed stadium. William H. Hudnut III
William H. Hudnut III was not only the longest-serving mayor but also one of the city’s most beloved. Forever linked to the sports strategy that helped bring the Baltimore Colts to Indianapolis in , Hudnut’s terms as mayor saw the maturation of public-private partnerships that helped to transform the shape of downtown.
Hudnut’s path to politics was unique: he arrived in Indianapolis in to serve as minister for the Second Presbyterian Church. Like his father and grandfather before him, Hudnut had attended Princeton University (from which he graduated Phi Beta Kappa) and Union Theological Seminary. At the latter, he worked with noted theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, whose teachings helped Hudnut once he entered political life.
He first did so in , when he was elected to represent the 11th Congressional District in the House of Representatives. Just two years later, his fortunes reversed when he lost his re-election bid, and Hudnut’s political career seemed over.
