William Penn Facts and Accomplishments
William Penn is the father of Democracy in the United States, who Thomas Jefferson called
"the greatest lawgiver the world has produced."
He was a pacifist Quaker whose founding of the Christian government of Pennsylvania in inspired the later United States of America; his family kept ownership of it until the American Revolution.
William Penn was also one of the great champions of religious freedom in 17th century England, repeatedly imprisoned, who helped preserve the greatly persecuted Quaker religion that survives today.
Penn's new government originated the principles of representative government, separation of church and state, and elimination of nobility and ranks while producing almost exactly a century before the U.S. Constitution concepts such as an elected 2-house Congress to pass bills, religious freedom, freedom of speech, and a Bill of Rights.
He also, in , drafted a lengthy proposal for a future European Union or, as he called it, a "European League, or Confederacy."

William Penn (14 October – 30 July ) was an English Quaker, entrepreneur, philosopher and founder of Philadelphia. Penn was an influential figure in the early American colonies, helping to promote ideas of democracy, religious tolerance and the idea of uniting the American colonies.
Early life
William Penn was born to a wealthy Anglican family, the son of Admiral Sir William Penn. He was born in Tower Hill, London in , but after a childhood episode of smallpox (where he lost all his hair) the family moved to a small country estate in Essex. He studied at Chigwell School and later Christ Church, Oxford.
Penn’s father had inherited a large estate in Ireland for his service to Cromwell during his conquest of Ireland. When William Penn was 15, the family fell out of favour with Cromwell and they moved to this estate in Ireland. However, a year later, Cromwell died and, as an admiral in the navy, Penn’s father was instrumental in successfully bringing back the exiled Charles II by boat back to England. The King was very grateful for Penn&#;s service and felt indebted to his family.

William Penn was the son of an admiral and landowner, and he was educated in theology and the law. In his twenties, he converted to the Quaker religion and was jailed several times for his resistance to the Church of England. In , he received a royal charter to form a new colony in America, to be named Pennsylvania; he envisioned this territory as a peaceful refuge for members of all religious beliefs.

Penn was educated at Chigwell School in Essex; he entered Christ Church College (University of Oxford) in , but was expelled for criticizing the Church of England. His father sent him to France, where he studied theology at the Protestant Academy in Saumur. When he returned to England in , he briefly studied law.
