Alfred Tennyson was born on August 5, , in Somersby, Lincolnshire as the son of a clergyman, George Tennyson. He had a troubled childhood as his father suffered from a mild form of mental illness, fits, and alcoholism. It was from his mother, Elizabeth Tennyson that he acquired the spirit of poetry in his childhood days.
She would read out to her children works of Milton, William Collins, and Thomson. Tennyson got inspired primarily by his mother.
In his teens, he entered Trinity College, Cambridge but was called home soon because of his father&#;s illness. In and , he published two volumes of poems which were met with harsh criticism and this deeply wounded him. Meanwhile, Arthur Hallam, one of his friends died suddenly. Tennyson was born in Somersby, Lincolnshire, England on August 6, He would be one of his family's 11 surviving children (his parents' firstborn died in infancy). Tennyson grew up with two older brothers, four younger brothers and four younger sisters.
Tennyson's father was a church rector who earned a decent income, but the size of the family meant expenses had to be closely watched. Therefore, Tennyson only attended Louth Grammar School (where he was bullied) for a few years. The rest of his pre-university education was overseen by his well-read father. Tennyson and his siblings were raised with a love of books and writing; by the age of 8, Tennyson was penning his first poems.

He was the fourth of the twelve children of the Reverend George Clayton Tennyson (–) and his wife Elizabeth Fytche (–). The Tennysons were an old Lincolnshire family settled at Bayon’s Manor.

Alfred Tennyson was born August 6th, , at Somersby, Lincolnshire, fourth of twelve children of George and Elizabeth (Fytche) Tennyson. The poet's grandfather had violated tradition by making his younger son, Charles, his heir, and arranging for the poet's father to enter the ministry. (See the Tennyson Family Tree.) The contrast of his own family's relatively straitened circumstances to the great wealth of his aunt Elizabeth Russell and uncle Charles Tennyson (who lived in castles!) made Tennyson feel particularly impoverished and led him to worry about money all his life.
He also had a lifelong fear of mental illness, for several men in his family had a mild form of epilepsy, which was then thought a shameful disease. His father and brother Arthur made their cases worse by excessive drinking. His brother Edward had to be confined in a mental institution after , and he himself spent a few weeks under doctors' care in In the late twenties his father's physical and mental condition worsened, and he became paranoid, abusive, and violent.
