Alfred M. Landon was born on September 9th, , the son of John and Anne Landon. Alfred received preparatory education at Marrietta Academy in Ohio. He grew up in Ohio and when he was 17 they moved to Kansas. Landon graduated from the University of Kansas in with a degree in law. He was married to Margaret Fleming on January 9th, ; she died in After some time, he married Theo Cobb in While Landon was growing up, he got into the oil business and made a success of it. Though he was successful, Landon used his degree in law to begin a political career and joined the Republican Party in With his knowledge of the law, he helped to campaign for Theodore Roosevelt and also the Progressive Party. Landon helped to propose programs that dealt with women's suffrage, direct election of senators, antitrust legislation, and the prohibition of child labor. In , Landon was elected governor of Kansas; as such, he became a key figure in the Republican Party. He continued to be a key figure throughout the s. In , Landon sought the Republican presidential nomination opposing the re-election of FDR. At the Republican National Convention in , Landon's campaign manager John Hamilton mobilized the younger elements of the party against the faction led by Herbert Hoover. Landon won the nomination on the first ballot; the convention selected Chicago newspaper publisher (and FDR's future Secretary of the Navy) Frank Knox as his running mate.
Landon proved to be an ineffective campaigner who rarely traveled. Most of the attacks on FDR and social security were developed by Republican campaigners rather than Landon himself. In the two months after his nomination he made no campaign appearances. As columnist Westbrook Pegler lampooned, "Considerable mystery surrounds the disappearance of Alfred M. Landon of Topeka, Kansas The Missing Persons Bureau has sent out an alarm bulletin bearing Mr. Landon's photograph and other particulars, and anyone having information of his whereabouts is asked to communicate direct with the Republican National Committee."

During World War I, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army chemical warfare division.
