Australian Crawl was an Australian rock band formed by James Reyne (lead vocals/piano) and Simon Binks (lead guitar) in and joined by Guy McDonough (co-lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Bill McDonough (drums, percussion), Paul Williams (bass guitar), and Brad Robinson (rhythm guitar). In if you’d wanted to invent a truly Australian group, you’d have invented Australian Crawl, five sun bronzed Aussies from middle to upper class backgrounds: possibly the first high profile band to draw their influences almost solely from their Australian predecessors ( in Australian Crawl’s case, groups like the Dingoes and Sports). The band Spiff Rouch formed in in the Mornington Peninsula suburb of Mount Eliza on the outskirts of Melbourne. The group lineup featured James Reyne, brothers Bill and Guy McDonough, Paul Williams, Robert Walker and Simon Binks. Reyne had previously played drums for Archie Slammit and the Doors. By early Spiff Rouch had separated into two groups: The Flatheads (including the McDonough brothers and Walker, along with Sean Higgins and Nigel Spencer) and Australian Crawl. The original lineup for the latter was Reyne as vocalist, Binks on lead guitar, Williams on bass guitar, along with Reyne's younger brother David Reyne on drums and schoolmate Brad Robinson on rhythm guitar. Australian Crawl performed their first live gig in October and toured the pub Reyne left the group in to finish his acting course, later becoming an actor and TV presenter as well as drumming for Cats Under Pressure and the Chantoozies (&#;). He was replaced in Australian Crawl by Bill McDonough. Their debut album The Boys Light Up had a number of hit singles including the title track; &#;Indisposed&#;; and &#;Beautiful People&#;. The Boys Light Up appeared on the Aussie charts for weeks. In the band released their second album, Sirocco. This album contained the hits &#;Lakeside&#;, &#;Things Don&#;t Seem&#; and &#;Errol&#;, a song written about the Australian actor Errol Flynn. It was produced by Peter Dawkins in Sydney.
In they released the Sons of Beaches album. The album was recorded in Hawaii with producer Mike Chapman. The album featured the hit &#;Shutdown&#; and it became their third album in a row to reach the top five in the Australian charts.
