In , more than 25 years after Coolidge’s death, a small volume of essays about him was collected by Edward Connery Lathem. Long out of print, it is a marvelous little treasure of personal sketches, written about Coolidge by those who knew him. Some knew him very well; others more superficially. All however, offer aspects of “Silent Cal” that are not only delightful to read, but offer wonderful insights into the man himself.
There are about three dozen of these character studies, easily read in ten or fifteen minutes. Most are well written; some are wonderfully of them, taken as an entity, present a more complete understanding of President John Calvin Coolidge () than any of the standard biographies, including a classic tome by his contemporary, word-happy William Allen White.

My introduction to Calvin Coolidge on this journey included seven biographies providing nearly 3, pages &#; and almost two months &#; of entertainment (well&#;scholarship).
Like many former presidents whose memories are dulled by lazy parodies or unreflective caricatures, Coolidge proved to be more interesting than I initially suspected. Yet he remains far more mysterious than I (or presumably his biographers) would have hoped.
Probably by self-design, Calvin Coolidge is a very difficult person to get to know. It is often recalled that George Washington possessed a demeanor so reserved that his personality was impenetrable to anyone outside his family. Coolidge, on the other hand, possessed a mien so restrained and remote that even the NSA could hardly have deciphered his true inner self.
Based on what I do know of Coolidge, I don&#;t think he would be the least bit disappointed to know he didn&#;t quite make my list of the Top 40 former presidents I would love to have over for dinner and drinks. Early Life and Career
John Calvin Coolidge Jr. was born in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, on July 4, His father, John Coolidge, was a successful farmer and small businessman who served in the Vermont House of Representatives and the Vermont Senate, as well as other local offices. Coolidge's mother died when he was 12 years old, and his teenage sister, Abigail Grace Coolidge, died several years later.
Coolidge’s earliest American ancestor, John Coolidge, emigrated from England around , settling in Massachusetts. Coolidge's great-great-grandfather, also named John Coolidge, was an officer in the Revolutionary War.
Coolidge attended Amherst College in Massachusetts, and later apprenticed at a law firm in Northampton. In , he was admitted to the bar, opening his own law of
His father was civic minded and held several elected offices, even serving as a state representative and state senator. His mother, Victoria, loved nature and poetry. Unfortunately, she died when Calvin was 12 years old. Then five years later he experienced another tragedy when his sister Abigail died of a ruptured appendix. Calvin, at that time, was away at school attending the Black River Academy which was twelve miles from his home. He lived in Ludlow to attend the school and some weekends he walked home to see his family.
He attended Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. As a painfully shy young man, it was hard for him to get acquainted with his peers, but he did well in school and developed a dry wit which would be an asset to him the rest of his life.
