Henri Membertou

Grand Chief, "First Nations leader, role in establishing Mi'kmaq-French Alliance." [1]

Henri Membertou was the sakmow (Grand Chief) of the Mi'kmaq First Nations tribe situated near Port Royal, site of the first French settlement in Acadia, present-day Nova Scotia, Canada. Originally sakmow of the Kespukwitk district, he was appointed as Grand Chief by the sakmowk of the other six districts. His exact date of birth is not known. However, Membertou claimed to be a grown man when he first met Jacques Cartier, which would mean that he was probably born in the early years of the sixteenth century.[2][3]

According to Lescarbot, Membertou was already more than years old in This is probably an exaggeration. Membertou stated that at a period when he was himself already married and the fath

Chief Henri Membertou, revered Grand Chief of the Mi'kmaq First Nations near Port Royal, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on 18 September , at the age of

Born around in Kespukwitk, he was a towering figure known for his leadership and spiritual wisdom among his people.

Chief Membertou's life was marked by a profound commitment to his community and the preservation of Mi'kmaq traditions. Before assuming the role of Grand Chief, he served as District Chief of Kespukwitk, overseeing his tribe's affairs in the region surrounding the early French settlement of Port-Royal.

His encounters with European settlers, beginning with Jacques Cartier and later with the French at Port-Royal, forged enduring bonds of friendship and mutual respect. Known for his diplomatic acumen, Membertou navigated complex relationships, ensuring the prosperity and cultural integrity of his people amidst changing times.

MEMBERTOU (baptized Henri), chief of a Micmac band; d. 18 Sept.  at Port-Royal (Annapolis Royal, N.S.).

According to Lescarbot, Membertou was already more than  years old in This is probably an exaggeration. Membertou stated that at a period when he was himself already married and the father of a family he had known Jacques Cartier. His eldest son, Louis, is supposed to have been 60 in ; and that also appears exaggerated, since all of Louis’s children were then very young. The exploits attributed to Membertou during a fighting expedition in are ill suited to a centenarian. Similarly, the titles conferred on him by the French should not be taken literally. Membertou commanded a following of Micmacs who hunted and fished in the basin of the river and harbour of Port-Royal, and on the shores of St. Mary’s Bay in Nova Scotia. It would be unwise to state a precise figure for the population of this band;  souls seems a generous estimate. Messire Fléché, who baptized all the Indians passing through Port-Royal, scarcely reached the number of in a year.

The chief of a band, or sagamo, assumed responsibility for directing and protecting a group of ind

[1] From a reading of history one will learn that certain members of the de Monts expedition traveled south aboard their ocean going sailing vessel, in , and were to meet up with the Armouchiquois who occupied territory beyond that area located in the present day State of Maine, Saco. They had with them "an Indian with his squaw" taken from those Acadian Indians which they had come to know during the winter of / Now, its not likely that this was our Membertou, but who ever this couple was, they no doubt recounted their experiences to their family and friends upon their return to Acadia. These experiences are dealt with in some detail in Chapter 4, The Founding of Port Royal, sufficient to say that these Frenchmen participated in one of the first battles that Europeans had with the North American Indians, of the many that were to unfold in the bloody history between the two groups in the following years. The point is, that French guns were turned on the Armouchiquois, a turn of events which undoubtedly much endeared the French to the Micmac and their leader, Membertou. This is the likely reason why Membertou "showed an unswerving loyalty" towards his French allies (DCB).
