Populated by animals and cartoon characters, Songs for Gay Dogs is a monographic exhibition by German artist Cosima von Bonin (, Mombasa) that highlights her most recent creations. The exhibition presents works produced over the past ten years, alongside new commissions and some well-known works. It unfolds in a series of staged scenes involving familiar characters pulled from the world of animation, comic strips or from under the sea. Cult figures such as Daffy Duck and Bambi take part in the exhibition, alongside fish, whales, scallops, rabbits, sharks and pigs.
Cosima von Bonin has established herself as a singular figure in contemporary art by way of infusing sharp and humorous perspectives on our society. Her textile, sculptural and multimedia installations subvert pop culture icons and luxury industry emblems, staging stuffed animals and everyday objects that uncover the absurdity of power relations and mass consumption. Coming of age in the vibrant art scene of Cologne in the s, Cosima von Bonin drew from the irreverent spirit of that time and established long-lasting artistic collaborations. Cosima von Bonin was born in in Mombasa, Kenya. She came of age in Cologne during the s where she was part of the booming art scene; she still lives and works in the city. Most well-known for her sculptures and installations created from fabric and readymades, she often uses comedy and pop culture to question social constructions and relations.
In , the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt and Mudam Luxembourg opened majors exhibition of her work. In , her installation on the façade of the Giardini’s Central Pavilion welcomed visitors to the Cecilia Alemani-organized The Milk of Dreams at the 59th Venice Biennale. She has also participated in Skulptur Projekte Münster (), Glasgow International (), and Documenta ( & ). From the post-(Martin) Kippenberger generation, today Cosima von Bonin is among the most prolific and influential artists in Germany and borrows from her prestigious predecessor his strategies of hyper-productivity, perturbation, transgression, and irony with respect to the conventions of art, as well as those of the ideological struggles of the s – above all, feminism. She initially made a name for herself through her many collaborations with other artists, musicians, or theorists, thus seeking to extend the field reserved for the artist to that of producer, curator, critic, or disc jockey.
It was not rare to find her making use of the invitation of a gallery or a museum to delegate her presence, as at the Kunstverein Braunschweig, where she took advantage of the chance to exhibit the work of New York artist Nils Norman.
