The author of America’s national anthem, Francis Scott Key, was born on August 1, on his parents’ plantation “Terra Rubra” in Frederick, Maryland.

He was schooled at home until the age of 10 when he was sent to St. John’s Grammar School in Annapolis. After attending St. John’s College where he graduated top of his class, he studied law in Annapolis with Judge Jeremiah Case. In he moved back to Frederick where he set up a law practice. In , Key married Mary “Polly” Taylor Lloyd and moved to Washington, DC.

In , Key joined the army in the War of against Great Britain. While in battle in Baltimore, Key and two soldiers were taken prisoner by the British. Locked in the cabin of their boat, Key would look out the porthole for the American flag flying over Fort McHenry. Seeing the flag there meant the Americans were still in control. While on the boat, Key began to write a poem about the impact of that vision. Francis Scott Key was born August 1, , near Keymar, Maryland, at the family plantation known as Terra Rubra. He was a lawyer and amateur poet but only gained fame after authoring America’s national anthem – The Star-Spangled Banner.

During the War of , Key and Col. John Skinner traveled to Baltimore and negotiated the release of a prominent Maryland physician (who was arrested by the British). After the negotiation was complete, Key and Skinner were forbidden to return to Baltimore by British officials. Key and Skinner had been exposed to the British plans to bombard Baltimore (Fort McHenry). Instead, they were made to wait in the ship they came in until after the bombardment. On the morning of September 14, , the British bombardment of Fort McHenry began. The combined sea and land assault lasted 25 hours! Wave after wave of British cannon fire and Congreve rockets were shot toward Fort McHenry. Through it all, however, the massive 30 x 42 foot flag, which flew over Fort McHenry, remained waving. Francis Scott Key was a successful attorney who served during the last year of the War of in the militia (small armies made up of troops residing in a particular state) of Washington, D.C. He only gained fame, however, after he wrote a poem that later became "The Star-Spangled Banner." Key was a witness to the British bombing of Fort McHenry. Inspired by the sight of the U.S. flag still flying after a bombardment that lasted twenty-four hours, Key wrote a poem on the back of a letter. It later gained popularity around the country, and in it became the national anthem of the United States.
