K. Shivaram Karanth Biography

K. Shivaram Karanth was a noted writer from Udupi, Karnataka. He received Jnanpith award for Kannada work, Mookajjiya Kanasugalu in the year He was multi-facet personality. He was a writer, social activist, environmentalist, Yakshagana artist, film maker and thinker. He is often regarded as ‘Rabindranath Tagore of Modern India’ by Ramachandra Guha for his contribution to novel category post independence. He is always regarded as one of the greatest novelists of Kannada literature. He returned his Padma Bhushan honor in protest against the Emergency, imposed by Indira Gandhi. Other awards and appreciations include - Sahitya Academy award in the year , Pampa Award, Swedish Academy award and Tulsi Samman. He has also received Special Jury Award / Special Mention (Feature Film) as a Writer in National awards.

 

Shivaram Karanth was born on 10 October in Udupi. He completed his primary education in Kundapura and Mangalore. He was Karnataka's renaissance man, reconciling science and art as few have done. Kota Shivarama Karanth wrote his first book in , completing eventually and winning the Jnanpith. Yet, above all else, he was a thorn in the flesh of orthodoxy. In Chomana Dudi, Karanth explored the plight of a Dalit. The rigidity of Brahminism was not for him and he put principle to practice by entering into an inter-caste marriage. The dissenting instinct was as sharp when he returned his Padma Bhushan in protest against the Emergency. Karanth's pen was formidable. He compiled an acclaimed encyclopedia on popular science for children. His treatise on Yakshagana, the folk art from his native Dakshina Kannada district, was commended by the Swedish Academy. It was also the rampant industrialisation of Dakshina Kannada which brought out the ecologist in Karanth, he who made heresy an art form.
