Ashir Azeem is a Pakistani writer and actor, who rose to instant and immense in the 90s, with a smash hit drama &#;Dhuwan&#;. It involved a group of friends who formed a vigilante force by night and had professional lives by day. After which he left the media world to focus on his own career as a civil servant. In the last few years his contribution to Pakistani cinema was a hit film by the name of &#;Maalik&#;, which in the footsteps of his drama, focuses on the nature of corruption in Pakistani society, had good dialogues and had enough action to keep the scenes interesting and cinematically appealing.

The Maalik story &#; from the Horse&#;s mouth
Maalik is in the midst of a huge controversy. All kinds of motives are being attributed to my film and although everybody is entitled to their views, I thought a straight narrative from the one who knows Maalik the best, may help.
Before going further, a brief intro. I was born in Quetta and proudly call Baluchistan my home. I am ethnically a Punjabi and my ancestral roots may be connected to a village near Nankana sahib in the district of Sheikhupura, near Lahore. Being a common man I have little use for title, surname and caste and I have never used my caste (Gill) as part of my name. The only reason I choose to bring this up is because one of the allegations against Maalik is promoting ethnic hatred and depicting Punjabi Supremacy. Punjab is a province that I have little exposure to, and I have spent only two years of my life in Punjab, on two separate occasions and both on official duty. Besides if I was promoting Punjabis, would PML(N) government ban Maalik and KPK Government allow it?
Getting back to Baluchistan, where I was born, I was raised among the Pashtoons and Baluch. All my childhood friends school and college friend
Let me tell you one thing. First of all, he is a patriotic legendary, Asher, and what
he has shown is very close to our, I mean, what to say, like politics, everything. My
role, particularly, which I played in the movie, is very close to some of the facts
of our life in our region, you know. So, I don't know, I have to say that it is a movie
to see and you will just really feel and enjoy how the people works over there, how the politicians
are doing over there, how they misuse, you know, the rights and the powers. So, let it
be very clear that we have shown, Asher has shown the facts of life. I don't know, I have
to say or not. It mirrors the society that you live in, basically. So, whatever we are
showing in the film is from, is based on real life events of what Pakistan is confronting
today, you know, and we just try to put it across. But, it's not, we have not targeted,
as I said earlier, not targeted any particular party, any particular individual. It's a work
of fiction.
