Profile: Nouri Maliki

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki first came to power in , at a time when sectarian violence was threatening to tear the country apart.

Mr Maliki resisted pressure from Washington to request an extension of US troop presence in the country, and presided over the formal end of the US military presence in Iraq.

However, despite his alliance narrowly winning the parliamentary election, he has struggled to contain a new tide of violence which has seen several cities slip from Iraqi government control, and has suffered shrinking support from Sunnis and Kurds.

He was also forced to defend himself from accusations that he has used the judiciary to silence and imprison political rivals.

In August , after months of political infighting, new President Fuad Masum asked MP Haider al-Abadi to form a new government, despite Mr Maliki's protestations that the move was "unconstitutional".

Maliki is married with four girls and one boy. Maliki holds a Bachelor's degree from the Faculty of theology in Baghdad, an MA in Arabic from the University of Salahaddin in Sulaymaniyah, and a master's degree in English from the University in Erbil. Maliki was formerly employed at the Ministry of Education.

Biography of Nouri Kamel al-Maliki

Nouri Kamel al-Maliki, the newly appointed Prime Minister of Iraq, was born in in the city of El-Hindiya, a suburb of El-Hilla in southern Iraq, into a Shiite family. He completed his education at a religious college in Baghdad and continued his studies at Baghdad University, where he defended his master's thesis in Arabic literature.

Opposition and Exile

After graduating from college, al-Maliki lived in El-Hilla for some time, working in the education sector. He became a member of the opposition party, Al-Dawa, and in , he was sentenced to death for his party activities. Al-Maliki, along with his comrades, fled to Iran. During the Iran-Iraq war, he decided to settle in Syria. In Damascus, al-Maliki led an armed group responsible for training militants abroad to act against Saddam Hussein's regime.
