People & Ideas: Francis Schaeffer

A Presbyterian minister, maverick theologian and prolific author, Francis Schaeffer is credited with providing American evangelicals the intellectual framework that encouraged them to enter the political arena in the s.

In , Schaeffer and his wife, Edith, moved to Switzerland and founded L'Abri, meaning "shelter," a small community that served as a spiritual oasis for young people and philosophical wanderers. With his long hair, goatee, knickers and knee socks, he appeared the embodiment of the counterculture, a man equally at ease quoting the songs of Bob Dylan or passages from Scripture. He loved art -- music, painting and sculpture.

What Schaeffer disdained was secular humanism, the worldview that cast aside the core message of the Christian faith in favor of one devoid of Christian values. "Why has our society changed?" he asked. "The answer is clear -- the consensus of our society no longer rests upon a Christian basis, but upon a humanistic one. Humanism is man putting himself at the center of all things, rather than the creator God." The result, Schaeffer argued, was a society that had lost its moral foundation and threatened to

Frank Schaeffer is the son of Francis and Edith Schaeffer, who founded the L’Abri community in Switzerland in L’Abri was a hippie, Evangelical commune through which many a young seeker passed and where young Frank was raised according to what he calls the doctrine of fundamentalist Christianity. Dad was an evangelical Christian theologian, philosopher, and Presbyterian pastor who passed away in Dad was in many ways the guru and founder of the modern Evangelical Right movement in America.

That was then. This is now. Something happened to Frank Schaeffer along the way, and he has become an outspoken critic of many of the religious and social issues he at one time fully supported. I recently had the privilege of talking on behalf of Liberty with the nowyear-old author, film director, screen writer, and public speaker. My primary purpose was to discuss one of his books, Why I Am an Atheist Who Believes in God.

But our conversation took on a life of its own as we wandered freely through his life, revealing the deep insights and personal motivations that carried him on his journey

Growing up Schaeffer

Frank Schaeffer has long been l'enfant terrible of the evangelical world.

The son of Francis Schaeffer, for years known as "Franky" Schaeffer, is-now that he's approaching no longer l'enfant. But, as his new book Crazy for God makes clear, he remains terrible, in both the best and worst senses of that word.

The plus-page book is a memoir of growing up Schaeffer at L'Abri, the center founded by Francis and Edith Schaeffer in Switzerland. The Schaeffers and L'Abri, French for "the shelter," have become a part of the legend of post-World War II evangelicalism. Theirs was a place where, according to that story, brilliant young seekers from around the globe could take time out from modernity to find Jesus at the feet of a goateed Francis Schaeffer. It was a Rivendell for hippies.

The Schaeffers themselves did not discourage these ideas. Francis took to wearing knickers when he traveled to England or the United States on speaking tours. Edith's books, including Tapestry and L'Abri, both recorded and perpetuated the story. And, to be sure, many hippies and budding intellectuals did find Jesus there. Intellectuals such as Os Guinness, Harold O.J. Brown, a

Church Leadership

Francis Schaeffer was a pioneer in the field of apologetics and the development of a Christian response to the anti-supernaturalism which dominated western thought in the 20th century. He worked out a biblical and evangelical philosophy which proved to be a challenging alternative to emptiness and despair which characterised secular Europe at that time. Schaeffer also understood that the cultural shift was especially reflected in the arts and was able to help a number of us who were trying to develop a Christian approach to creativity in these influential areas of life. Here, Ray Evans, of Grace Community Church, Bedford, provides us with a brief overview of Schaeffer's contribution to Christian thought and action.

Francis Schaeffer became one of the most influential Christian leaders of the twentieth century. He came from a humble working-class background in Philadelphia, studied under Gresham Machen at Westminster Seminary for a while, was the pastor of some small churches in the USA, and then spent most of his life in Europe, to which he had come at the end of World War 2 as a missionary. Never seeking 'fame' or 'a name', God used him to help hi
