An Indian-American Journey
January
With about four million of us Indians in America, no stereotype, let alone a single narrative can capture the essence of our dynamic and diverse community. Yet, comedian Rajiv Satyal’s intimate and inspiring portrayal of his family’s American journey provides a fairly representative snapshot of our journey, identity, and place in the U.S.
I’m sitting with my parents and two brothers in the family room (appropriately) of our home in Fairfield, Ohio. It’s the eve of the finale performance of the one-person show about my prolonged single life, No Man’s Land, which I had debuted in Los Angeles five months earlier. I was scheduled to play the Aronoff Center in downtown Cincinnati, when I remarked, “Twenty years ago, if you’d predicted that one of the Satyal Brothers was about to perform at the Aronoff, one was about to be married, and one would have an advanced degree, you’d have gone 0 for 3 on that forecast.” All five Cincinnati-based Satyals love to laugh, but it’s rare that we’d all crack up equally hard at the same l

I finally figured out what Donald J. Trump is: He’s a heckler.
Hair Apparent.
The White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner showcases Presidents’ ability to do standup comedy. Whatever your politics, there’s little question that Barack Obama is the best ever to do it. (Ronald Reagan may have been just as funny overall but Obama’s standup ability is unparalleled.)
The comedian and the heckler have an intimate, if opposite, relationship. One is trying to build something and one is trying to tear it down. It’s almost like two kids on the beach — one constructing a sand castle and the other trying to knock it over.
(Btw, that’s how I picture Brahma and Shiva. And Vishnu’s in the middle, just trying to… maintain.)
Here’s the thing, though: the comedian does not need the heckler. The heckler does need the comedian. Because comedians are doing all the creating; are hecklers are doing is destroying. If the comedian doesn’t make anything, there’s nothing to tear down.
And that’s one of the great ironies of Donald Trump. For a real estate builder, he’s a lot better at being a wrecking ball than a crane. Does Washington, DC need to be demolished? Yes, but only if

Rajiv had an unusual entry into standup, doing his act for then-World No. 1 tennis player Pete Sampras in a locker room. Satyal has some interesting claims to fame: he opened for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in front of 17, people. He made the massively viral I AM INDIAN video, which has been seen over million times, shared by Bollywood stars, and used to introduce the Indian Prime Minister in Shanghai and Dubai. He was the first person to perform an hour of standup comedy anywhere in India. He has opened for Russell Peters more than any other Indian comedian. Rajiv has opened multiple times for Tim Allen, Sebastian Maniscalco, Jo Koy, Kevin Nealon, and Dave Chappelle, and even opened Chappelle’s very first show after his much-publicized African hiatus. One night in New York City, Satyal closed the show at Gotham Comedy Club, following one of his heroes, Jerry Seinfeld.
Satyal has 13 videos with over , YouTube views each, and been featured by Amazon, NPR, Nickelodeon, Netflix, G
