Pealizar una crónica del Sr. Carlos Páez Vilaró, y agregar algo más de todo lo mucho que se dijo, resulta difícil. Pero comencemos. Realmente fue un símbolo de Uruguay durante décadas, y lo continuará siendo eternamente. Su vida fue muy particular, de estudio, planeamiento, y sacrificio, creyendo siempre en sus ideas. Pintor, escultor, ceramista, escritor, muralista, constructor, compositor, director, y sobre todo hombre de mundo. De mañanas, tardes, noches y madrugadas, intensas, muy intensas, que supieron de charlas en ruedas de café, de caminatas por la costa de Maldonado, de reuniones con gente de aquí y de allá, y de mucho borocotó, borocotó chas chas allá en el Mediomundo o en el propio desfile de llamadas. Lugar donde se mostró desfilando, tocando el tamboril, días antes de su partida al cielo, para continuar pintando las nubes, ese sol tan particular que lo identifica, y las estrellas, con el color esperanza de su entusiasta pincel. Carlos Páez Vilaró nació en Montevideo, Uruguay, el 1° de noviembre de Debido a su fuerte vocación artística se fue en su juventud a Buenos Aires, donde se vinculó al medio de las artes gráficas, como aprendiz de cajista de imprenta en Barracas y Avellaneda. Regresó a Uruguay, en la década del 40, motivado por el tema del candombe y la comparsa afro-oriental y se vinculó estrechamente a la vida del conventillo “Mediomundo”, entra de lleno a manifestarse en el campo del arte. Páez Vilaró se entregó totalmente al tema, pintó decenas de cartones, compuso candombes para las comparsas lubolas, dirigió sus coros, decoró sus tambores o incentivó un folklore que en ese momento luchaba por imponerse contra la incomprensión.

Se mudó a Argentina en y se convirtió en aprendiz de imprenta. Muy impresionado por el contraste entre lo ordinario de la vida de fábrica y el vigor y la vitalidad de los distritos de tango de Buenos Aires, creó sus primeras pinturas que exhiben esas percepciones. Aproximadamente 10 años después, en la década de , regresó a Uruguay y comenzó a profundizar en los colores brillantes y audaces del arte y la cultura afro-uruguaya.
Durante los años desde hasta fines de la década de en Buenos Aires, exploró el arte a través de dibujos y pasó los años absorbiendo experiencias culturales. Luego regresó a Uruguay para lanzarse al baile y la música Candombe, viviendo en Mediomundo, cautivado por la herencia negra de Uruguay.
