Coach Roelant Oltmans sheds light on revival of Pakistan hockey
ISLAMABAD: Head coach of the Pakistan hockey team, Roelant Oltmans, was disappointed over missing the chance of making it to the Paris Olympics.
However, the Dutch coach believes that the revival of Pakistan hockey largely depends on winning the Nations Challenge Cup starting in Poland from the last week of May.
In a media talk at the Bunda Ground Wednesday evening, Oltmans said Pakistan came close to qualifying for the Paris Olympics but in the end they missed a good opportunity of making it to the Olympics and playing in the company of top 12 teams.
“I am sure that had I continued from the junior string to the senior team months before the Olympics, we would have made it to the Olympics. There was a good chance of making it to the Olympics following the juniors’ splendid performance in the Junior World Cup where the team finished among the top teams.

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), however, is yet to officially speak on it.

It would be Oltmans&#; second stint with Pakistan hockey after he coached the team in till the Athens Olympics, in which Pakistan finished fifth.

Once confirmed, Oltmans will have to get down to business straightaway as Pakistan are scheduled to feature in the Commonwealth Games, Champions Trophy, Asian Games besides the World Cup later this year.

The first phase of the camp concluded the other day where 36 players trained under the watchful eyes of national coaches. Juniors were not part of the training camp as they were busy playing the World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.
“We will now retain only half of those who were busy training in Islamabad prior to junior players’ arrival while the entire junior squad for the World Cup will be made part of the second phase of the training camp that will stay in operation till the departure of the team for the Olympic Qualifiers,” one of the coaches told The News.
He said that by the time head coach Roelant Oltmans joins the camp on January 2, the best available lot will be there for final selection.
“Oltmans is expected to join the training camp as head coach on January 2. However, before that the second phase will get underway at the Bunda Ground on December 26,” he said.
