Early Life
Jacob-Abraham-Camille Pissarro was born on July 10, , on St. Thomas, in the Danish West Indies. Pissarro’s father was a French citizen of Portuguese Jewish descent who traveled to St. Thomas to help settle the estate of his late uncle and wound up marrying his uncle’s widow, Rachel Pomié Petit. The marriage was controversial and not immediately recognized by the small Jewish community where they lived. As a result, the Pissarro children grew up as outsiders.
At the age of 12, Pissarro was sent by his parents to a boarding school in France. There, he developed an early appreciation of the French art masters. After completing his education, Pissarro returned to St. Thomas, and although he initially became involved in his family's mercantile business, he never stopped drawing and painting in his spare time.

Born on the island of Saint Thomas in the Antilles into a wealthy family of Jewish origin, the French painter Camille Pissarro soon went to study in Paris, where he decided, against his parents’ wishes, to take up painting. During the s he continued to show his works at the successive Salons, but their rigid principles soon clashed with his anarchistic political ideas, and he ceased to take part in official exhibitions in His painting always remained stylistically in the orbit of Impressionism, except for a short period of experimentation with the Neo-Impressionist technique under the influence of Georges Seurat in the mids. Pissarro was a firm believer in the idea of an artist’s cooperative and played
The Woods at Marly
In June Camille Pissarro and Claude Monet returned to France from England, where they had taken refuge during the Franco-Prussian war. After settling again in Louveciennes, a picturesque town on the banks of the Seine not far from Port-Marly, where he had rented part of an eighteenth-century house in , Pissarro continued to paint the effects of light on the surrounding paths and forests. Being forced to move away from the subject matter of his paintings had been highly traumatic for this great master of landscape art and his dismay was further exacerbated by the fact that his house had been sacked by German troops and many of his paintings destroyed during his absence. On returning he went back to Louveciennes to paint many of the rural scenes of the previous years, as taught by the Barbizon painters.
Pissarro, who very soon became a major promoter of the Impressionist exhibitions and took part in all of them, remained faithful to the new language for practically his entire life. This early painting of The Woods at Marly, dated , shows a path in the forest of the Château of Marly viewed from Porte du Phare, with Marly-le-Roi in the background and fea
