Brief Life Story of Abdullah Ibn Abbas (R.A.)
His full name is AbduIIah bin Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib bin Hishim bin Abd Manaf Qurashi Hashimi. He was the paternal cousin of the Prophet (S.A.W.) and maternal cousin of Khalid Bin Waleed (R.A.). He was born just three years before the Hijrah (approx. CE). When the Prophet (S.A.W.) died, Abdullah (R.A.) was only thirteen years old. Abdullah ibn Abbas (R.A.) was nephew of the Maymoonah bint Al-Harith (R.A.), who later became Ummul-Muminin [Mohammad's (S.A.W.) wife]. He was known as “Sea of Knowledge” and one of the early Quran scholars.
It is said that Abdullah Ibn Abbas (R.A.) committed to memory about 1, sayings (Hadiths) of Allah’s Messenger (S.A.W.) which are recorded and authenticated in the collections of Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
When Abdullah (R.A.) was born, his mother took him to the Prophet (S.A.W.) who put some of his saliva on the baby's tongue even before he began to suckle. This was the beginning of the close and intimate tie between Abdullah Ibn Abbas (R.A.) and the Prophet (S.A.W.) that was to be part of a life-long love and devotion.

The house of Ibn ‘Abbas was the equivalent of a university, with specialized teaching on a wide variety of subjects. He taught every day and held classes on tafsir, fiqh, halal & haram, poetry, Arab history, inheritance laws, the Arabic language and etymology, among other fields.
Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنه entered the isthmus in Ta’if in the year 71 AH. His grave is located in Ta’if at the Mosque of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas, alongside eleven Companions who were martyred at the Battle of Hunayn رضي الله عنهم.

Invocation 6 from IGI’s Morning and Evening Invocations is a tradition known as “Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas’ رضي الله عنه Verses of Complete Sufficiency.”
These verses are from Surah al-Rum:
So glory be to Allah when you reach evening & when you rise in the morning · and to Him be praise, in the heavens and on earth, and at eventide and at noontide · He brings out the living from the dead, and brings out the dead from the living; and He gives life to the earth after it is dead; and thus shall you be risen up again [from dust].

Abdullah ibn Abbas
Abdullah was the son of Abbas, an uncle of the noble Prophet. He was born just three years before the Hijrah. When the Prophet died, Abdullah was thus only thirteen years old.
When he was born, his mother took him to the blessed Prophet who put some of his saliva on the babe's tongue even before he began to suckle. This was the beginning of the close and intimate tie between Abbas and the Prophet that was to be part of a life-long love and devotion.
When Abdullah reached the age of discretion, he attached himself to the service of the Prophet. He would run to fetch water for him when he wanted to make wudu. During Salat, he would stand behind the Prophet in prayer and when the Prophet went on journeys or expeditions, he would follow next in line to him. Abdullah thus became like the shadow of the Prophet, constantly in his company.
In all these situations he was attentive and alert to whatever the Prophet did and said. His heart was enthusiastic and his young mind was pure and uncluttered, committing the Prophet's words to memory with the capacity and accuracy of a recording instrument. Who is `Abdullah ibn `Abbas?
He is `Abdullah ibn `Abbas ibn `Abd Al-Muttalib ibn Hashim, Abu Al-`Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), the paternal cousin of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him).
His mother was Lubabah bint Al-Harith ibn Hazan ibn Bajiyyah ibn Al-Hazam ibn Rubiyyah ibn `Abdullah ibn Hilal ibn `Amir ibn Sa`sa`ah Al-Hilali.
He (may Allah be pleased with him) was called the scholar (Al-habr) and the ocean (Al-bahr), because of his abundant knowledge and his deep understanding of subtle issues. He was the scholar and jurist of the ummah, the spokesman of the tribe, a brilliant reflection of prophethood, the one for whom the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) prayed that he would have deep understanding of the faith and of the Quran, thus he was known as the interpreter of the Quran.
