Who Will Rule South Africa?
Description
In , Nelson Mandela powered the ANC to victory in South Africa’s first democratic election. Thirty years later, the ANC is fighting to escape political liquidation.
How did we get here and who will rule South Africa next?
In this gripping and fast-paced account of the state of the nation, 30 years after South Africa became a democracy, award-winning journalists Adriaan Basson and Qaanitah Hunter forensically track the demise of the ANC, from Mandela to Ramaphosa, and the rise of a new political class that will determine the next phase of South Africa’s democracy.
Drawing on years of reporting from the front line, Basson and Hunter highlight how corruption and greed subsumed a liberation movement by turning a party of freedom fighters into one of villains. They track the ANC’s involvement in corruption and underhand dealings, from the arms deal to state capture to the dollars-in-the-sofa Phala Phala scandal.
A close examination of Cyril Ramaphosa’s first term in office shows how his bold promises to turn around the ANC’s fortunes amounted to little. The book reveals previously unpublished material detailing Ramaphosa’s failures of gov

From the outset I was lured into expecting a typical broken family drama, but around a quarter into the story, I experienced that something wider was evolving. “This house feels as if it’s filling up with people, with their stuff.” (p) After her husband left to start a new family, Lila remained in the family house with her two daughters, nine year old Violet, rather unconventional, and her teenager, Celie, with her own set of challenges.
Enters her stepfather, intent to stay, with his cooking and tidying which makes her feel inadequate and before long, her own father who walked out on them when she was just a kid. A totally dysfunctional crowd with “mad history and chaos, heartbreaks, stupid jokes, ridiculous triumphs” (p), but this is Lila’s family, she realizes.
We all live here is about relationships, that between spouses, parents and children, sexual, professional. It is also about trust, grief, forgiving and growing older. The plot is character driven, with Lila eventually reaching a point where she “feels something in her soften, some long-held tension start to evaporate, replaced instead by a sense
Balance of Power
First, it’s one of the most readable political books about South Africa that I’ve recently completed. The first seven chapters were very interesting.
I’ve read reviews by others saying ‘that was too short’ and ‘ I could have read all of that in Business Day’. Well, maybe the issue is more the price of books in South Africa (R, Exclusive Books), but in terms of length, it’s no different to other SA political books I have read.
I did find it insightful. It revealed details of Nasrec and the NEC meetings that followed, and alliances amongst the top six, that I was wholly unaware of. (And this, despite the fact that I read all the papers, and all the wires every day), and have done so for years.
(My own direct interaction with Mpumalanga delegates, who were giving me the thumbs up as I walked through a Sandton shopping mall, Ramaphosa biography in hand, BEFORE the start of the Dec 17 conference, was a little different to the author’s suggestion of a last minute deal. Just saying).
As intriguing as it was to begin with, towards the end, I found the book had become too descriptive, maybe even a little rushed. For example, P
Qaanitah Hunter
Young Qaanitah Hunter could be found with a hairbrush in hand, reporting live from "warzones" in her mother's bedroom. Almost two decades later, Hunter is living the dream her six-year-old-self envisioned as one of the youngest political editors in the country.
"I was obsessed with politics from a very young age, and it's all I wanted to be," she said.
Before she turned 18, Hunter was in the trenches working as a journalist while studying.
Although she says she might not necessarily be the loudest voice in the room, the power of her pen does the talking. She’s gone face-to-face with some of the biggest names in politics in her quest to hold power to account.
In her fierce political reporting earned her the Nat Nakasa Award for brave and courageous journalism making her the award’s youngest recipient. In , at the age of 26, she was appointed News24's Politics Editor.
Despite the accolades, Hunter says she’s had to work twice as hard to prove herself.
"As women in journalism, we should not be defined by barriers that people put up for us. We should not be defined by what others think," she said.
Hunter was recently promoted to the Assistant Editor: Politi
