Who was Qutb ud-Din Aibak?

Qutb ud-Din Aibak ( – 14 November ) was a central figure in shaping the early history of Muslim rule in India. His life story is an extraordinary tale of a slave who rose to become the founder of the Delhi Sultanate, which established the foundation for centuries of Muslim dominance in northern India.

Aibak’s journey, from a slave in Turkestan to a ruler in Lahore, highlights not only his military prowess but also his diplomatic and administrative skills. His reign was brief but highly impactful, as it marked the transition from the Ghurid Empire’s rule in India to the establishment of an independent Muslim sultanate, setting the stage for his successors to further consolidate and expand their rule.

Muhammad&#;s nephew Ghiyas-ud-din succeed him at Ghur and his other two lieutenants such as Taj-ud-din Yeldoz and Nasir-ud-din Qabacha got the area from Afghanistan to upper Sindh and Uch and Multan respectively. After his death all of them became independent in their respective territories.

Qutb-ud-din Aybak (Persian / Urdu: قطب الدین ایبک) was a Turkic ruler of medieval India, the first Sultan of Delhi and of the Slave dynasty (also known as the Ghulam dynasty). He served as sultan for only four years, from to , but had more or less run Muhammad of Ghor's Indian territory since the conquest of Delhi in Before he died, Aybak had started to build the Qutub complex, which remains as a permanent architectural legacy. Who was Qutb-ud-din Aibak?

Qutb-ud-din Aibak was a Turkic king of Northwest India who ruled from his capital in Delhi where he built the Qutub Minar and the Quwwat Al Islam mosque. He was of Turkic descent from central Asia, the first Sultan of Delhi and founder of the Ghulam dynasty of India. He ruled for only four years, from to AD. He died while playing polo in Lahore.

Qutb-ud-din Aibak ruled for four years until he had a fatal accident while playing chaugan. His horse fell and he was impaled on the pommel of his saddle. His early death prevented him completing his plans for organizing his kingdom and establishing a sound administration. He built the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque in Delhi and the Adhai-din-ka-Jhonpra mosque in Ajmer. He started the construction of Qutb Minar in Delhi, which is dedicated to a famous Sufi Saint of the time, Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki. After he died, the minar was completed by his successor, Iltutmish. He is also remembered as lakhbaksh or giver of lakhs, because of his generosity.
